The idea of a vacation for most people is staying in a four star hotel or camping in a tent but there are others who want all these together in one package. A camping trailer or an RV allows you to camp and still enjoy the four star amenities. However, in order to keep your camping trailer looking clean, nice and ready for your next vacation you will need to adhere to a regular maintenance schedule. Here are some detailed tips on how to maintain a camper trailer.
1. Check for any leaks
Wet weather can bring about unexpected leaks but depending on the age and location of your camping trailer, leaks causing water damage can be a serious problem. The most common areas that are prone to leaks include the roof and along the seams although different trailers are constructed from different materials. A simple water leak test can help locate the damp areas on your trailer’s interior. Use of sealants such as butyl/putty, roof sealant, silicone and foam can help prevent water from getting into areas it should not. Sometimes incorrectly positioned or damaged seals can cause leaks hence maintaining proper seals will also help prevent serious water damage to your camping trailer.
2. Inspect the tires and wheel bearings
It is important to inspect the trailer tires and wheel bearings before every trip and ensure that any repair or replacement needed is done. Tires are prone to cracks and rotting if left to sit in the sun which is why RV tire covers are recommended. Ensure that your trailer’s axle bearings are greased at least once a year as this can make a huge a difference to your camping safety and peace of mind. Bearings can be tortured by excessive heat and they could come off the wheel causing a serious accident. Ensure that the grease you use is right for your axle bearings and is also compatible with what is already inside the hub.
3. Clean mold and mildew
The strong canvas used to make camping trailers are prone to mold and mildew especially during wet weather. It is important to thoroughly clean the canvas using the right household products. A stiff-bristled brush can be used to scrub away any excess dirt on the canvas roofing and walls. Avoid applying soapy water directly to the canvas but instead apply it to a piece of cloth first and then scrub the area using the cloth until it is clean. Hydrogen peroxide or white vinegar can also be used to kill the mold and mildew. Hydrogen peroxide is more effective but can bleach the canvas while vinegar is great for removing smell from the mold. Airing the tent in direct sunlight can also kill mold.
Maintaining your camping trailer in good shape not only ensures that your vacations are fun and adventurous but it also increases the trailer’s resale value. Just like your car, a camping trailer is a major investment that should also be properly taken of so that you can enjoy your home-away-from-home. While trailers have no transmission or engines, they tend to experience a lot wear and tear especially to the axle bearings and suspension.
